Updating the Aladdin Hardware Key

Adding new modules is easy. In V6.5 (or later), simply click on Start>>All Programs>>Power Tools for Windows v6.5 and select "Key - Local Hardware" or "Key - Network Hardware" depending on whether you're programming a stand-alone key (white or green) or a LAN key (red).

In V6.0 (or earlier):

  1. Click on Start>>Run>>Browse.
  2. Find the ALAUSER.EXE program (which will usually be found in the C:\PTW32\BIN directory).
  3. Select the file and then click on "Open".
  4. If you are re-programming a red LAN key, add " nethasp" so that the run dialogue box reads:
        "C:\PTW32\bin\AlaUser.exe nethasp".
  5. Check that the hardware key is connected to the PC's parallel port and click on "OK" or press "Enter".
  6. You will have been provided with a set of enable codes (usually in the form of a screen dump). Please enter the enable codes and tick the boxes required to add the modules that are to be added. If reprogramming a red LAN key, make sure that the numbers of users are also correct.
  7. Make sure that everything (including the key's revision number and serial number) matches the screen dump exactly.
  8. Click on "Update".

This process updates the hardware key itself. If you are moving a stand-alone hardware key around between several PCs, the AlaUser program only needs to be run once. It does not need to be run on each PC that has PTW installed on.

This process is the same whether a parallel port key, or a USB key is used.

Common problems:
If you're updating a LAN hardware key, make sure that the hardware key is connected directly to the PC running the ALAUSER program - it's not normally possible to update a LAN hardware key over a network. A remote console desktop connection to the server (Run > mstsc /v:servername /console) may work, but is not guaranteed.

Make sure that you've installed the latest hardware key drivers. If you're unsure, it's worth uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers. This is done using the KeyUtil.exe program, which is in the X:\PTW32\BIN directory.
